Set of Two Antique Catholic Devotional Crucifixes under Convex Glass – Ornate Frames – circa 1890–1920 Beautiful set of two antique Catholic devotional crucifixes, dating from approximately the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1920. Although presented together, the two pieces have different frames and are not claimed to have originally formed a pair. They nevertheless display remarkably similar crucifixes, with the same decorative character and construction. Each crucifix features a gold-coloured cross decorated with an elaborate silver-coloured Corpus Christi, an INRI cartouche, a radiant halo and finely worked openwork ornaments at the ends of the cross. Both crucifixes are protected behind attractive convex glass, giving them the characteristic depth and appearance of antique domestic devotional objects. Oval crucifix The first crucifix is presented in an oval dark wooden frame richly decorated with carved rose and leaf motifs. Behind the convex glass is a beige textile background arranged in deep folds, creating a particularly attractive three-dimensional presentation. Approximate dimensions: * Height: 36 cm * Width: 29 cm * Weight: approx. 900 g Rectangular crucifix The second crucifix is displayed against a deep red textile background and surrounded by an ornate rectangular frame with dark patinated and gilt decoration. Its strongly convex glass gives the crucifix considerable visual depth. Approximate dimensions: * Height: 37 cm * Width: 30 cm * Weight: approx. 1,100 g Materials Wood, convex glass, textile, gold-coloured metal and silver-coloured / silver-plated metal. No claim is made that the silver-coloured elements are solid silver. Period Late 19th / early 20th century, approximately 1890–1920. Condition Both pieces are in antique condition, with age-related wear, patina, marks and imperfections to the frames and rear coverings. The backs retain their old construction and show clear signs of age. The convex glass is present on both pieces. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and provide the best representation of the condition. An attractive and highly decorative set of antique Christian devotional objects, particularly appealing when displayed together because of the contrasting oval and rectangular frames and the remarkably similar crucifix designs.
