Antique Brooch with Turquoises & Diamond Roses in Silver on Gold, c. 1895

“Paris, France, Nov. 30. – Turquoises are becoming more and more fashionable. The delicate and tender color of this pretty gem produces a quiet and refined effect when paired with diamonds or pearls, taking into account the size of the piece it adorns.” “Quiet and refined” is also how this brooch presents itself; it was created during the turquoise fashion trend of the 1890s. Although turquoise was actually considered a modest semi-precious stone, particularly beautiful specimens were often set alongside diamonds. The turquoises used here are of exceptional quality and have been wonderfully preserved: they are a radiant turquoise blue, uniform in colour, as cool and refreshing as the biting cold of a starry winter night. Yet the jewel does not appear ostentatious or even garish: the interplay of the blue stones with the subtly shimmering rose diamonds and the dark silver creates an elegant triad.
