Antique Art Deco Bracelet with Pearl & Diamonds, c. 1930

White jewels—that is, pieces of jewellery in white hues—celebrate the light. The invention of the electric light bulb at the end of the 19th century turned night into day. As a result, jewellery could now shine in the evening like never before. At the grand balls in Paris, London, and St. Petersburg, increasingly magnificent diamond necklaces were showcased, along with tiaras, brooches, and rings—all of them dreams crafted from white diamonds. When, at the beginning of the 20th century, first platinum and eventually white gold made their way into jewelers’ display cases, this white radiance was perfected. The bracelet presented here is a beautiful example of this trend. The bracelet, crafted from high-karat gold, shimmers with a cool white glow thanks to its platinum overlay on the front. The design widens in the center to accommodate a shimmering Akoya pearl in off-white. Saw-cut shadow joints, small diamond roses, and milgrains structure this section in the Art Deco style. The craftsmanship, design, and materials used indicate that the bracelet was created around 1930. According to the hallmark, the piece of jewellery was exported to Switzerland before 1934.
