Antique Westerwald stoneware jug – salt glaze with cobalt blue decoration – Germany – 18th/19th century A particularly atmospheric antique stoneware jug, executed in gray-beige stoneware with characteristic cobalt blue decoration. The full, pear-shaped body, narrow ribbed neck and sturdy applied handle give this jug the powerful appearance that is so typical of historic Rhineland utilitarian pottery. On the basis of form, material, salt glaze and the cobalt blue painted decoration, this jug is very likely to originate from the well-known Westerwald tradition in Germany. In the Westerwald, especially the historic Kannenbäckerland to the east of the Rhine, high-fired stoneware has been produced since the 16th century. Characteristic are the gray stoneware, salt glaze and decorations with cobalt oxide. Particularly interesting is the form of this example: a substantial pear-shaped/oval belly, short cylindrical neck with horizontal rings and a large applied handle. The Fitzwilliam Museum describes Westerwald jugs with a very similar combination of an oval body, short neck, applied handle, horizontal blue bands and stylized cobalt blue floral work. The freely painted blue ornament on this jug consists of swirling lines, flower- and leaf-like motifs and loose brush strokes. It was exactly in the 18th century that, in addition to stamped and incised decoration, more freely applied blue painting appeared on Westerwald stoneware. Comparable pear-shaped jugs with freely painted cobalt blue tendrils are generally dated to the 18th to 19th century. On that basis I would cautiously date this example for Catawiki as the 18th century to early 19th century, without claiming a more precise year unless there is a makers mark or dated inscription present. The salt glaze has a beautifully lively surface with the typical light structure and natural variations that arise during firing. The cobalt blue is locally strong and elsewhere softly bleed, which enhances the handmade appearance. Characteristics - Object: antique jug / pouring jug - Provenance: probably Westerwald, Germany - Period: presumably 18th century to early 19th century - Material: high-fired stoneware - Finish: salt glaze - Decoration: hand-applied cobalt blue - Color: gray/beige with deep blue accents - Pear-shaped, substantial belly - Ribbed cylindrical neck - Large applied handle - Twisted form with visible artisanal irregularities - In so far as visible, inconspicuous wear - Authentic historical usage and collector’s item Condition The jug is in a clearly used antique condition with an attractive patina of age. There are discolorations, wear, small pittings, glaze irregularities and kiln marks across the surface. Locally there are dark spots and minor surface damages consistent with age and craftsmanship. Also on the neck, lip rim and handle there are age-related and usage marks. These are clearly shown in the detail photos. Signs of use are visible in the photos. Precisely the combination of the robust stoneware, weathered salt glaze and spontaneous cobalt blue decoration makes this a very decorative piece with a lot of character. Lovely in a collection of historical ceramics, but also strong as a standalone object in a country, classical or wabi-sabi interior. Dimensions: Height 33 cm Diameter top-middle-bottom 5-22-11 cm Photos give a clear impression of quality and are part of the description. The interior photos were generated with AI and are intended solely to illustrate the object in a living environment.
