Antique hand-carved wooden tray with a bird motif – kerf carving / chip carving – circa 1900–1910 A particularly beautiful antique wooden tray from the early 20th century, richly executed with artisanal woodcarving in kerf carving or chip carving technique. The warm, dark brown wood forms a striking contrast with the darker worked relief, causing the decoration to stand out prominently. centrally across the tray a graceful bird with long, spread wings and tail feathers flies. Around it an almost oval garland of tendrils and leaves is applied. The leaves are composed of numerous sharp, triangular cuts that create a particularly beautiful play of light and shadow. Especially up close, one can clearly see how much handwork went into the decoration. Kerf-cutting or chip carving is a traditional form of wood decoration in which small, often triangular or wedge-shaped portions are cut from the surface with a knife or gouge. The technique was widely used in European folk art and applied art. Also in the Netherlands, including Friesland, trays richly carved in this technique from the early 20th century are known; a similarly dated specimen from 1902 is described as Frisian kerf carving. The strong emphasis on handwork, natural motifs, and decorative objects also aligns with the renewed interest in artisanal applied arts around 1900. In Dutch craft arts of this period, material, cutting technique, and ornament again took a prominent place. This piece stands out for its figural composition. While much kerf-carving work uses mostly geometric patterns, here a full bird among tendrils and leaves is built up from hundreds of individual cuts. The result has an almost mosaic-like, three-dimensional appearance. The tray features tall, integrated handles at both short ends with oval cut-outs. The slightly flaring sides and profiled edge give the piece an elegant form. A fine dark line outlines the central decoration and strengthens the composition. The natural signs of use contribute to the warm and authentic appearance of the tray.
