All auctions / Arts & Graphics / Anonymous - Papel para fumar 'Toro' - 1930s
Original advertisement poster dating from around 1930 for the Spanish brand 'Toro' of rolling papers or cigarette rolling paper. A young bull looks at the audience with defiance: for 5 Spanish centimos per 'booklet' you can't afford to mess around.... Printing: Litografia S. Dura - Valencia Condition B+: light signs of use and rolling marks. Image intact. Fresh colors. Shipping: rolled in a sturdy tube with track & trace. The history of rolling papers begins in the 16th century in Spain, where soldiers returning from France adopted the habit of rolling tobacco remnants in thin paper. In 1532 the first handmade sheets of paper were used for smoking. In the 17th century Pay-Pay and later JOB pioneered selling rolling papers in small booklets. In the 19th century industrial paper production expanded on a large scale, turning rolling papers from a luxury into an everyday product.
