Anonym - Werther

Goethe.- Anonym. Die Leiden des jungen Werthers. Ein Trauerspiel in drey Aufzügen fürs deutsche Theater. Ganz aus dem Original gezogen. Frankfurt am Main, Garbe, 1776. 62 Seiten, 1 weißes Bl. Mit Kupfertitel (von J. Schnapper). Kl.-8°. Marmor. Brosch. d. Zt. Goethe.- Anonymous. The Sorrows of Young Werther. A tragedy in three acts for the German theater. Drawn entirely from the original. Frankfurt am Main, Garbe, 1776. 62 pages, 1 blank leaf. With engraved title page (by J. Schnapper). Small octavo. Marble binding. Contemporary paperback. Goedeke IV/III, 185, 27.c (erroneously listed under 'Translations of Sinner's Les Malheures de l'Amour'); Kippenberg 3259.- First printing of the first edition; Compared to the second printing, which was larger and featured the title engraving (a mirrored re-engraving of Dunker's iconic title page of the first Walthard edition of Werther). – 'The French drama (Les Malheures de l'Amour) provoked... the displeasure of another anonymous publisher who wanted to kill the French play with a new Werther tragedy. This very same printing bears the obviously fabricated publisher's imprint: Bern bey Jeremias Walthard 1776. The Walthard family tree shows no Jeremias' (Der Berner Verleger Beat Ludwig Walthard, Bern 1956, p. 27). 'Karl Philipp Moritz reports in the fourth part of his Anton Reiser (1790) on a visit to presumably this Werther play' (M. Wenzel p. 13, in: Goethe's Werther on Stage, catalogue for the exhibition Wetzlar 2015).- Faint (finger-stained).- Modern bookplate on the last white page.
