ANNAM. Tien, ND (1848-83). Tu Duc. PCGS MS-63. KM-404; Sch-354.1. Weight: 3.61 gms. Variety with fish swimming down. This nicely preserved Choice example boasts sharply struck bold devices that rise majestically from the surfaces. The fields are blanketed in a lovely mottled patina. Wholly original looking, this piece was clearly plucked from circulation early on and given great care, rendering it an exceptionally RARE and desirable acquisition for the advanced cabinet. The obverse inscription on this issue "Nhat Duc" (Perfect Virtue) is borrowed from the title chapter of the "Ancient Annals". This issue is often referred to as "Cua Toi Mot Duc Thi Nhu Ca Nuoc Duyen Hai" (The King and his ministers have but a unique virtue, such as the nice harmony of fish and water). It is said that emperor Thang (1670-1587 B.C.) and his minister Y Doan (died 1550 B.C.) were the two men whose virtue was pure and perfect and are officially recognized in China as wise men. Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
