Title: Harlequin ㅤ School: European School (20th century) ㅤ Author: Anna de Banguy (1908–1985) ㅤ Style: Expressive figurative ㅤ Technique: Oil on panel ㅤ Condition: Overall good state of conservation. It shows restorations and signs of aging appropriate to its era. ㅤ Circle and artistic influence: The work is part of European figurative painting from the mid-20th century, showing affinities with portraiture of an expressive character and with certain currents of postwar French figuration. The simplification of the background, the predominance of the psychological expression of the figure, and the impastoed brushwork in certain areas suggest a modern interpretation of the traditional portrait. The motif of the harlequin, widely developed by the European avant-garde since the early 20th century, is transformed here into an intimate and melancholic representation. ㅤ Anna de Banguy (1908–1985) was a French painter active during the 20th century, whose output was mainly linked to figurative painting. In her compositions, portraiture, psychological characterization of the characters, and the expressive handling of color and painting matter take on special importance. ㅤ The composition presents the bust of a young harlequin represented facing forward, slightly turned to the side, with a marked introspective expression. The face, with large blue eyes and delicately modeled features, concentrates the viewer’s attention and conveys a melancholic and contemplative character. ㅤ The character wears a wide white collar worked with thick, impastoed brushstrokes, while a large dark blue hat frames the head and creates an intense chromatic contrast with the flesh tones. The background is built with visible brushstrokes in greens, blues, ochres, and yellowish tones, adding texture and depth without distracting from the portrait. The combination of areas of precise execution and others of freer, more material brushwork reinforces the painting’s expressive character. ㅤ The work is presented with a wooden frame of considerable width, finished in cream, beige, and aged gold tones. Its stepped, moulded profile, together with the light-toned inner mat, provides visual depth and enhances the painting. The frame shows signs of use and wear due to the passage of time. ㅤ Observations: The work shows restorations. ㅤ The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging. In such a case, we will require photographs of the damages to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority. ㅤ Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by an surcharge due to reasons such as being outside a continental territory, excessive dimensions or weight of the item. PremiArt will not be responsible for this surcharge. ㅤ The courier that must cross the Swiss border can be much slower than usual, so, when possible, to speed up processing we will provide the customs number that is holding the shipment so the customer can release it and thus it can reach its destination. Experience has shown this is the most effective solution for both parties. ㅤ Due to the high volume of shipments, orders may be delayed by more than three days, for which we apologize and thank you for your patience.
