His works, which depict everyday objects and celebrities, challenged traditional notions of art and blurred the lines between art and consumer culture. Warhol's approach of translating everyday objects into an art context was strongly influenced by artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Johns' “Flag” and Rauschenberg's “Bed” use everyday motifs in new ways, which Warhol further developed in his “Campbell's Soup Cans” (1962). These ideas stand in the tradition of Marcel Duchamp's Readymades, such as his “Fountain” (1917), which questioned the role of the artist and the definition of art. Warhol continued these thoughts and created with his “Brillo Boxes” (1964) a synthesis of art and mass production, also influencing artists like Claes Oldenburg, who, with his oversized sculptures of everyday objects, such as “Floor Burger” (1962), explored similar themes. Warhol's reproduction and repetition of images through silkscreen printing also dialogues with the works of Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist. Lichtenstein's comic-inspired works like “Whaam!” (1963) and Rosenquist's large-format collages like “F-111” (1965) similarly captured the aesthetics of mass media. These artists critically reflected on commercial culture and consumer behavior while simultaneously dissolving the boundaries between high art and popular culture. Warhol's engagement with fame and impermanence, as in his “Marilyn Diptych” (1962), was also taken up by Richard Hamilton, a British precursor of Pop Art. Hamilton's “Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?” (1956) can be seen as a precursor to the pop-cultural themes Warhol later developed in the USA. Both artists explored the superficiality of modern consumer society and the idolization of celebrities. Warhol's influence extends into minimalist and conceptual movements. Artists like Donald Judd and Dan Flavin, who worked with serial structures and industrial materials, also addressed the relationship between art and production. Judd's “Untitled” (1967) and Flavin's neon light sculptures question the uniqueness of the artwork, much as Warhol did in his serial production. In summary, Andy Warhol remains a key figure in modern art, blurring the boundaries between art, consumer culture, and mass production.
