ANDRÉOSSY (Antoine-François). History of the Canal du Midi, or Languedoc Canal. Paris, Crapelet Press, Year XIII – 1804. 2 volumes in-4, fawn calfskin, double gilt and embossed framing on the covers, decorated spine, gilt edges (Binding from the second half of the 19th century). An important work devoted to the history of the Canal du Midi, first published in 1799. It is illustrated with an engraved portrait of the author, a fold-out chart, and 29 double-page maps, plans, and profiles. The ambition to connect the Garonne River to the Mediterranean dates back to Emperor Augustus, but it was not until the reign of Louis XIV that this idea was brought to fruition. Begun around 1667 under the direction of Pierre-Paul Riquet and hydraulic engineer François Andréossy, construction work lasted more than ten years; the canal was finally inaugurated on May 24, 1681. A few scorched pages; paper waste from notebook 46; one loose endpaper. A modest copy; the spine of the original binding has been reattached (part of it is coming loose at one joint).
