Andrea Alciato [Claude Mignault ( -1606), Lorenzo Pignoria, Francisco Sanchez de las Brozas (1523 - 1600), Jacopo Ruffoni] Emblemata cum commentariis Claudii Minois I.C. Francisci Sanctii Brocensis, & notis Laurentii Pignorii... Padova: typis Pauli Frambotti, 1661. Folio (mm 208x151). Beautiful architectural frontispiece populated with allegorical figures engraved in copper by Ruffoni, typographic frontispiece with a woodcut mark, repeated at the end, and hundreds of emblem vignettes engraved in wood halfway down the text. Modern vitellino binding in style with raised bands and gold-tooled spine, gilded edges. Published for the first time in 1531, Alciato’s Emblemata quickly gained popularity and were reprinted countless times. Edition based on the Padua version of Tozzi of 1621, sought after for Mignault’s extensive commentary and the reintroduction of the scandalous emblem LXXX. Landwehr, Romanic Emblem Books 103; Praz 252. Famed edition of Andrea Alciato’s Emblemata (1492-1550), Italian jurist considered the “father” of the emblem book literary genre. The book has numerous pages with damp stains; pages 561–576 are missing and replaced by blank pages during binding. This specific edition is regarded as among the most complete and significant in the history of the work. The Emblemata of Alciato, first published in 1531, are the foundational work of the literary-artistic emblem book genre, which combines symbolic images, Latin mottos, and short poetic pieces for moral or didactic purposes. Emblem LXXX: This edition is particularly sought after by collectors because it includes emblem number 80 (“Adversus naturam peccantes”), often removed in other editions due to censorship for its content deemed vulgar. Historical Importance First published in 1531, Alciato’s book achieved immense success, with hundreds of editions and translations across Europe, profoundly influencing Renaissance and Baroque art, literature, and culture.
