Andalusian School of the 18th Century - Child Jesus

Descriptio Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: 54.5 x 21 x 19.5 cm. This sculpture depicts the Christ Child standing, following a devotional style widely used in Spanish religious imagery of the 17th and 18th centuries. The image is conceived with a marked sense of tenderness and spiritual closeness, traits that contributed to the extraordinary popularity of these representations both in convents and private oratories. The carving displays a delicate anatomical execution, with particular attention to the modeling of the face, the arrangement of the hair, and the smooth articulation of the limbs, elements that reveal the sculptor’s technical skill. The polychromy reinforces the naturalism of the figure through warm flesh tones and meticulous characterization of the details. The work belongs to the Andalusian sculptural tradition of the 18th century, heir to the great Baroque masters of Seville and Granada, whose influence extended throughout the century through numerous workshops specializing in the production of devotional images. These sculptures of the Christ Child were intended to foster an intimate and affectionate devotion, becoming especially prized by religious communities and private collectors. Due to its stylistic characteristics, quality of execution, and refined polychromy, this image is a remarkable example of 18th-century Andalusian devotional sculpture.
