Ancient Roman Silver Legionary Crossbow Fibula

Ancient Roman Silver Legionary Crossbow Fibula

Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid. An ancient Roman silver crossbow fibula with a pronounced arched bow and a transverse head bar terminating in three rounded, onion-shaped knob terminals. The bow and foot are decorated with ring-and-dot decorations arranged between incised linear divisions. -> Crossbow fibulae developed during the third century and became particularly prominent during the Late Roman period. They were worn by members of the military and civil administration, gradually becoming visible indicators of office, rank and social status. Examples fashioned from precious metals such as silver would have been especially prestigious. Size: ± 41.2 x 32.8 mm Condition Good solid condition. The pin and catchplate are preserved. Attractive dark toning with reddish-brown mineral deposits in several recessed areas. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use. Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher. -> A fibula was a practical dress fastener used to secure a cloak or other garment. The name 'crossbow fibula' refers to the characteristic resemblance of its transverse head, arched bow and projecting knobs to the form of a crossbow. During the later Roman Empire, increasingly elaborate examples developed from functional fasteners into important items of personal display. Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics. Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material. Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
