Oil lamp with a frieze of triangles and foliage and a vase motif with a flower at the center. Material: terracotta, pottery Culture: Roman, dating to the 1st–3rd century BCE. Dimensions: length 12 cm, width 7 cm, height 3.5 cm including the handle. Good condition, one end of the top of the lamp is missing. Provenance: Milon auction house. A Roman oil lamp was a common object, essential in ancient Rome for illumination. These lamps were mainly made of terracotta. Oil was poured in and a wick extended out, serving as fuel. Lamps were often varied; they indicated the owner's social standing, beliefs, and featured numerous designs: animals, floral motifs, figures (gods, goddesses)... Lamps were widespread throughout the Roman Empire and are often found in tombs.
