A remarkable Roman bronze zoomorphic object presenting a dramatic composition of an eagle-like bird of prey positioned above and clasping a stag or horned animal. The eagle rises prominently at the centre, with a powerful head, elongated neck and projecting body. Beneath it, the second animal is incorporated into the composition, creating an unusually compact scene of domination between two creatures. Viewed from different angles, the sculptural modelling becomes particularly apparent. Within the Roman world, the eagle — aquila — possessed exceptionally powerful military associations. It became the emblem par excellence of the Roman legion and could evoke Jupiter, imperial authority, victory and military power. For this reason, the eagle gives the object a particularly strong martial character. The stag, if this identification is correct, introduces an interesting contrast. The stag was a familiar animal in the ancient Mediterranean imagination and could evoke the wilderness, vitality and the hunt. A composition showing the eagle overpowering or grasping another creature can therefore be presented symbolically as an image of strength, supremacy and triumph—while the precise original meaning of this particular object remains uncertain. The bronze retains an attractive mottled green and earthy patina, with lighter exposed areas emphasizing the contours of the eagle, the underlying animal and the three-dimensional modelling. The substantial sculptural form makes the piece especially impressive when viewed from several directions. Object: Zoomorphic bronze fitting / statuette · Culture: Ancient Roman, if supported by provenance · Material: Bronze/copper alloy · Motif: Eagle or bird of prey clasping a stag/horned animal, proposed identification · Symbolism: Roman military power, victory, strength and domination · Condition: Age-related wear and developed patina.
