Ancient Greek Lead Sling Bullets – Collection of 14 Glandes Classical–Hellenistic Period, circa 4th–1st Century BC From a Private European Collection. A fascinating collection of 14 Ancient Greek lead sling bullets (glandes), the characteristic projectiles carried by slingers on the battlefields of the ancient Mediterranean world. Each projectile was designed with one purpose: to transform the deceptively simple sling into a formidable weapon of war. Their compact, almond-shaped and biconical forms were ideally suited for flight, while the considerable density of lead allowed a relatively small projectile to strike its target with tremendous force. Imagine the battlefield more than two thousand years ago: before the opposing armies collided in close combat, specialist slingers could move ahead of the main battle line. From a distance they released volleys of lead projectiles towards enemy formations. Hundreds of these small missiles could cut through the air while infantrymen advanced behind their shields. Unlike arrows, sling bullets were remarkably compact. A soldier could carry numerous projectiles, while an experienced slinger could attack an enemy from considerable distance. The sling therefore became an inexpensive but highly effective weapon in the hands of trained troops. Their effectiveness is vividly illustrated by the ancient historian Xenophon. During the retreat of the Ten Thousand in 401 BC, the Greek army suffered from enemy missile troops whose range they initially struggled to match. Xenophon records how a force of 200 Rhodian slingers was subsequently organised. Using lead projectiles rather than the larger stones employed by their opponents, these specialists were capable of striking at considerably greater distances. Slingers continued to play an important role throughout Greek and Hellenistic warfare, being employed in pitched battles, skirmishes and sieges. The seemingly modest objects represented here therefore belong to a weapon system that accompanied some of the most dramatic military conflicts of the ancient Mediterranean world. The 14 examples display a fascinating variety of individual forms and surfaces. Several retain attractive earthen and mineral deposits, while others exhibit losses, deformation and impact-like damage. Such features are compatible with the hard utilitarian life of military projectiles. Rather than precious objects created for display, these were objects made to be carried, loaded into a sling and ultimately fired. That utilitarian purpose gives ancient sling bullets a particularly immediate connection with everyday warfare in antiquity. A highly evocative collection of 14 ancient military projectiles – tangible survivors of the world of Greek warfare more than two millennia ago.
