Ancient Egypt

An ancient Egyptian glazed faience plaque of a Deity, Possibly Imseti one of the four sons of Horus, protector of the canopic jars or packages, dating to the Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, circa 664–30 BC. Particularly interesting are the two ancient perforations, one near the upper part of the figure and another at the lower end. These indicate that the object was originally intended to be suspended, attached or sewn onto another material. The relatively flat construction and the two attachment holes support its identification as a figural amulet or appliqué plaque rather than a conventional shabti. Material and Surface Made from Egyptian faience, the object retains attractive traces of its original turquoise to blue-green glaze, particularly around the upper section, along the contours and within protected recesses. The remaining surface displays grey-green to dark green and brownish tones, together with mineral and earthy deposits. Areas where the glaze has worn away reveal the underlying faience body. The combination of surviving blue-green glaze and naturally aged surface deposits gives the object a distinctive archaeological appearance. Condition Age-appropriate condition with considerable surface wear. The plaque is substantially complete. Both ancient perforations remain preserved. The surface displays wear, minor chips and irregularities, together with mineral and earthy deposits. The original turquoise to blue-green glaze survives partially, particularly in protected areas. Details of the head and upper body are worn, and the original attribute above the head is only partially preserved. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance Formerly in the Madeleine & Erich Dammann Collection, Germany. Acquired during the collectors’ extensive travels between 1950 and 1970. The collection is documented in Germany by 1970 through historical photographs of the family residence and subsequently remained in continuous family ownership. The objects were acquired privately during the collectors’ travels. As was customary for private purchases made at local markets during the 1950s and 1960s, purchase receipts or invoices were generally neither issued nor requested. Historical photographs and biographical documentation relating to the Dammann Collection are available and support the long-standing provenance of the collection.
