Funeral terracotta horse pair, Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) PURCHASED IN A PRESTIGIOUS GALLERY IN 2007 FOR HK$145,000. SEE INVOICE China, Tang Dynasty. Important pair of funerary sculptures modeled in terracotta, representing bridled horses in a marching stance. The figures feature elegantly arched necks, finely worked heads, and carefully defined tack, reflecting the extraordinary significance the horse attained during the Tang Dynasty, a period of cultural splendor and military expansion of the Chinese Empire. The surfaces retain abundant traces of original polychromy in cream, ochre, and reddish tones, characteristic of Tang funerary production. These sculptures formed part of the items deposited in the tombs of aristocracy and high officials, symbolizing prestige, wealth, and social rank. Both pieces are accompanied by thermoluminescence reports issued by Oxford Authentication Ltd., whose results are compatible with the proposed Tang chronology. Examples of notable sculptural quality and excellent decorative presence, representative of one of the most brilliant periods in the history of Chinese art. Dimensions: * 55.8 × 50.7 × 20.7 cm * 55.1 × 52.5 × 19.5 cm #Orientalism
