All auctions / Porcelain & Pottery / Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) Reserve Redware Olla, Massive – 19" D

Anasazi, Hopi, Native American. Native American, Southwestern United States, west-central New Mexico / east-central Arizona, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) culture, Reserve phase, ca. 1000 to 1150 CE. An impressive and monumental olla of hand-built redware, coiled and scraped, with a broad, squat globular body. Its rounded shoulder rises to a short, gently concave neck and a slightly everted, undulating rim. The surface preserves faint traces of smoothed-over coil texture across the shoulder. Warm orange-red tones are punctuated by dramatic smoky-grey fire clouds from an open firing. Ollas of this size were the storage workhorses of Puebloan households, holding water, grain and seeds against the uncertainties of the high desert. Vessels on this scale demanded considerable skill to build and fire successfully, and fewer survive intact than their smaller counterparts. With its generous proportions, this example has a commanding sculptural presence and a beautifully weathered, earthy surface that attests to nearly a millennium of history. Item # 205676
