An old natural-fibre hat from the Asmat people of southwestern New Guinea, Carefully worked from twisted plant fibres, it features an intricate openwork structure with raised geometric patterns. Areas of reddish pigment contrast with the brown fibres, highlighting the textured construction. Small suspended ornaments remain attached along the lower edge. The interlocking loops and tightly worked sections reveal the skill involved in shaping this distinctive piece of personal adornment. The hat shows wear, fraying and some loose fibres, with uneven preservation of the red colouring. These details are visible in the photograph and should be considered part of its condition.
