An Invitation from the Satmar Rebbe to His Daughter’s Wedding to the

An original and exceedingly rare wedding invitation issued by the holy Rebbi Yoel Teitelbaum, Av Beit Din of Carei, for the wedding of his daughter, Rebbetzin Rachel, to “the successor of his father, my esteemed elder brother, the Gaon and holy Rabbi Chaim Tzvi, of blessed memory” – the holy Rebbi Yekusiel Yehuda Teitelbaum of Sighet. Carei, 1930. The Rebbe Yekusiel Yehuda Teitelbaum of Sighet (1912–1944), was the son of Rebbi Chaim Tzvi, author of Atzei Chaim, of Sighet, and the son-in-law of his uncle, the holy and revered Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar, author of Vayoel Moshe. He was also the brother of the Satmar Rebbe, author of Birach Moshe. He served as rabbi and Rebbe in Sighet, succeeding his father at just fourteen years of age. At his father’s funeral, the eminent Gaon Rabbi Shaul Brach, Av Beit Din of Károly, personally handed him a pitka (a written note traditionally presented to a Rebbe). His relative, Rabbi Yekusiel Yehuda Gross, was brought specially from Berbești to teach him the ways of rabbinic leadership and Chassidic rebbeship. In his second marriage, he became the son-in-law of another uncle, Rabbi Zusha, son of Rabbi Shalom Eliezer Halberstam of Ratzfert. Rקbbi Yekusiel Yehuda devoted considerable efforts to assisting refugees during the Holocaust. Despite the tremendous efforts of his holy brother, the author of Birach Moshe, who succeeded in saving him on several occasions during the terrible years of persecution, Rabbi Yekusiel Yehuda was ultimately murdered for the sanctification of God’s Name, together with many Hungarian Jews, during the mass killings of Iyar 5704 (May 1944). May God avenge his blood. Sadly, the bride passed away shortly after her marriage, on 1 Nisan 1931. In her memory, her father, the Satmar Rebbe, established the Chassidic movement’s renowned network of girls’ educational institutions, Beit Rachel. Likewise, the first central study hall of the Satmar Chassidim in Jerusalem was named in her honor Ohel Rachel. book
