Ca. AD 17001800 An Indo-Islamic curved khanjar dagger featuring a broad, sharply upturned steel blade tapering to a pronounced point. The blade is formed with a raised central ridge and is embellished at the forte with finely executed gold koftgari decoration, incorporating floral, geometric and possibly symbolic motifs. The hilt is of characteristic waisted form with a flaring pommel and guard, and is extensively decorated with dense gold inlay arranged in scrolling vegetal and figural designs. The rich contrast between the silver-grey blade and the gilded ornament enhances the visual impact of the piece. The surfaces display areas of wear, minor oxidation and patination consistent with age. Size: 34.9mm Provenance: Private London collection; US art market, before 2000. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
