All auctions / Silver & Gold / An exceptionally fine Cheroot Case made in London in 1842 by Charles

The case is broad rectangular in form, with an unusual curved design and pull-off cover. The whole of the exterior is finely, and beautifully, engraved with crisp pluming scroll work, trellis work and raying flower heads. The front displays a scroll cartouche containing a vignette of a desert scene with oriental building in the background, with palm trees, and a man with turban smoking a pipe resting against a resting horse. This has all been executed to an outstanding standard. The back displays a quite beautiful mirror cipher of the initials of the original owner. This is a most unusual scene to find on a box of this date. Charles Rawlings and William Summers were the premier box makers in London at this date and employed the finest engravers in their workshops. This is clearly seen with this piece. The case is in exceptionally crisp, original, condition and is fully marked on the sleeve of the base and inside the top of the cover. This partnership had workshops at 10, Great Marlborough Street, Regent Street, when this case was made. Length: 4.5 inches, 11.25 cm. Width: 3 inches, 7.5 cm. Weight: 7oz.
