An exceptional set of four George III Heraldic Sauce Tureens made

An exceptional set of four George III Heraldic Sauce Tureens made

The Tureens are modelled in a rectangular baluster form each standing on four paw feet with shell and acanthus leaf mouldings where they are attached to the main body. The sides rise to an everted gadrooned rim also decorated with shells and acanthus foliate in each corner. Each tureen has two plain faceted side handles, with bound acanthus capping. The stepped, domed, pull-off cover displays a wide lobed band and terminates in a cast finial modelled as the Coronet of an Earl on a circular ropework platform. Each side of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Crest on a chapeau surrounded by a scroll, shell and strapwork cartouche. The Tureens are all fully marked on the base and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the covers. The finials are also marked with the sterling mark and duty mark. The Tureens are all in exceptional condition and are of a very good weight. Benjamin & James Smith were important silversmiths working in the circle of Paul Storr. Their most important creation is probably the Jamaica Service in the Royal Collection. This is the Crest of HOWARD, with the addition of the Earls Coronet finial. These are as used by Richard HOWARD (1748-1816) 4th Earl of Effingham and 10th Baron of Effingham. He was the second son of Thomas Howard, 2nd Earl of Effingham, and Elizabeth Beckford, he was educated at Eton College from 1755 to 1762 before commissioning as a Lieutenant in the 1st Horse Guards, serving from 1768 until 1771. He then entered politics, Howard represented Steyning in the House of Commons from 1784 to 1790. Upon the death of his brother Thomas in 1791 without male issue, Howard succeeded as 4th Earl and 10th Baron Howard of Effingham, transferring his parliamentary service to the House of Lords, he married Harriet Elizabeth Marsh in 1785. He held court positions as Secretary and Comptroller to Queen Charlotte from 1784 to 1814, advancing to Treasurer until 1816, roles that showed his close ties to the royal household amid the later years of George III's reign. Length: 7.75 inches, 19.38 cm. Width: 5 inches, 12.5 cm. Height: 5 inches, 12.5 cm. Weight: 128 oz, the set.
