An enamel and diamond regimental brooch, early 20th century,...

An enamel and diamond regimental brooch, early 20th century, depicting a skull and crossbones, set with rose-cut diamonds, suspending a banner in blue enamel, the motto 'OR GLORY' in gold reserve, mounted in silver and gold, length 2.7cm, gross weight approximately 4.5 grams This striking regimental badge, its combination of motif and motto coming together to read 'Death or Glory', is used for the 17th Lancers, raised in 1759. Leading to the regiment's name as the 'Death or Glory Boys', the badge commemorates the death of Major-General James Wolfe in 1759 during the Battle of Quebec as part of the Seven Years' War. The regiment also participated in the disastrous 'Charge of the Light Brigade' in 1854 as part of the Crimean War. In 1922 it became amalgamated with the 21st Lancers, and continued to use the 17th regiment's dramatic imagery.
