Amsterdamse School / Art Deco smoking set in hammered metal – tray, matchbox holder, two smoking accessories cups and a candlestick – ca. 1920–1930 A particularly decorative five-piece smoking set from the first half of the 20th century, executed in the design language of the Amsterdam School and early Art Deco. The ensemble consists of a long, hammered tray with four matching smoking accessories: a matchbox holder, two open holders/cups for smoking paraphernalia, and an elegant candlestick. The most striking feature is the consistent metalworking. Both the tray and the individual parts are finished with a hand-crafted-looking hammered surface, combined with edges of small ball-shaped ornaments. The warm bronze- and brass-like tones, the sturdy geometric forms, and the artisanal surface fit nicely within Dutch decorative metalwork from the interwar period. Dutch metal manufacturers produced extensive smoking sets in the early Twentieth Century, including match holders, cigarette and cigar holders, tobacco pots and trays. For manufacturers such as Daalderop, the design language shifted from around 1918 toward Art Deco and the Amsterdam School. Similar historical sets combine hammered brass, dark patination, and geometric shapes. This piece is unmarked. It is therefore intentionally not attributed to a specific manufacturer or designer. The stylistic dating to the 1920s–1930s is based on form, materials, and comparison with known Dutch smoking sets from this period. Also, unmarked hammered brass objects are regularly dated to the Amsterdam School of the twenties within the collecting market. The long tray has raised, gracefully twisted ends and an almost completely hammered surface. The loose components complement each other decoratively. In particular, the combination of robust forms, dark patina, and warm metal gives the whole piece a lot of character. Features - Object: complete decorative smoking set / smoking apparatus - Number of parts: 5 - Comprised of: tray, matchbox holder, two smoking accessory cups and candlestick - Style: Amsterdam School / Art Deco - Period: presumably ca. 1920–1930 - Origin: presumably the Netherlands - Material: metal, mainly brass/copper-toned - Decoration: hammered surface - Elegant pearl/ball edging around several parts - Long tray with raised ends - Unmarked - Authentic dark patina Condition The piece is in an authentic used vintage condition with evident age and use marks appropriate for a smoking set of this age. The tray shows wear to the original finish, discoloration, patina, scratches, stains, and localized oxidation. This is particularly visible at the ends and on the hammered surface. The loose parts also show patination, discoloration, and signs of use. Oxidation is visible on the top of the candlestick. The candlestick has been previously repaired. Around the connection of the upper candle holder there are clear signs of an older repair/solder joint. This has deliberately not been concealed and is clearly captured in the detail photos. The piece has not been polished; the existing patina is preserved and contributes to the historical look. Usage marks are shown in the photos. The photos form an important part of the condition description. A atmospheric and increasingly difficult-to-find interwar smoking set, interesting for collectors of the Amsterdam School, Art Deco, Dutch metalwork, and historical smoking accessories.
