Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning “not drunk,” as it was thought to protect against intoxication. It holds a special place in Christian tradition. More than an ornament, it embodies purity, temperance, spiritual wisdom, and sacred authority. As a sign of spiritual authority and Catholic tradition, amethyst is often worn by bishops on their pastoral ring. It symbolizes wisdom in judgment, moderation in power, and fidelity in service to God. The violet of amethyst also corresponds to the liturgical color of Lent and Advent, moments of penitence, spiritual preparation, and focus on what is essential. In Christianity, this evokes temperance, a cardinal virtue that enables resisting excess and living with measure and purity. Thus it is associated with: self-control, rejection of earthly temptations, clarity of soul and mind. As a contemplative element through its deep, luminous color, amethyst is also seen as a stone of contemplation, promoting: elevation of the soul, inner prayer, and openness to divine wisdom.
