Alphonse Balleydier - Histoire politique et militaire du...

Historic three-volume set devoted to the political and military history of Lyon during the French Revolution, notably to the revolutionary events, political confrontations, the Lyon insurrection, and the subsequent repression. 19th-century edition, published in 1846 by booksellers-publishers Curmer and Martinon, based on photographed title pages. Alphonse Balleydier’s work constitutes a detailed historiographical testimony on one of the most turbulent periods in Lyon’s history. Illustrations: The collection is enriched with numerous black-and-white engravings, including portraits of historical figures, revolutionary scenes, military episodes, and depictions of iconic Lyonese places. Among the listed illustrations are portraits of Chalier, Camille Jordan, Kellermann, General Précy, as well as depictions of the September 29th day, the machine-gun fire of the Lyons, and the Château of Pierre-Scize. Bindings: Three volumes in green half-leather bindings, green and black marbled paper boards, spines with raised bands adorned with gilded motifs representing military headgear, gilded titles and volumes. A particularly decorative ensemble, presenting a beautiful harmony of bindings. Condition: Good overall condition for works dating from 1846. Sturdy, appearance-appropriate bindings, with some signs of wear and rubbing due to age. Still well-preserved gilding. Interior pages showing a light patina of time, some foxing and sporadic yellowing. The pages and photographed engravings are well preserved. A fine set of three volumes, of interest both to collectors of rare books and to enthusiasts of French revolutionary, military, and regional history. See the photographs to assess precisely the condition and quality of bindings and illustrations.
