All auctions / Miscellaneous / Alois Kohout (1891-1981) - Scorcio di Anacapri (Capri)

The framed painting depicts an urban scene with a large dome, a narrow alley of Anacapri on the island of Capri, and the Church of Santa Sofia. Created by the painter Alois Kohout, Czech and Bohemian painter (Prague 1891 – Los Angeles 1981), who was known during his international career in Paris and the United States also under the Francophone pseudonym Alois Lecoque. Kohout trained in Zagreb and Paris under the guidance of Master Baschet. He was strongly influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, specializing in urban views, landscapes and architectural glimpses characterized by a deft use of light and atmosphere. The painting is an oil on canvas that shows a clearly Post-Impressionist matrix, typical of the Paris School: The brushstrokes are dense, tactile, and the blocks of color do not seek photographic detail, but aim to capture the volumes and texture of stone and surfaces through dense layers of pigment. Warm, earthy tones (browns, ochres and brick hues) dominate in the foreground and in the wall structures. These tones contrast sharply with the cool blue-gray of the sky and the shaded dome, creating a crepuscular, melancholic and evocative atmosphere. The painting was purchased by a private collection, but the heirs have no additional information. In good condition with normal signs of age and wear. The painting comes with a frame, but it is included as a complimentary addition. The painting measures 50x70 cm without the frame. See photos for condition and dimensions. I do not ship outside the European Community. The lot will be carefully packaged and shipped in a reinforced polystyrene box.
