All auctions / Arts & Graphics / Alice Bernardine Esders (1910-1984) - Splendida natura morta floreale

Refined collection piece that blends the rich post-impressionist textured painting of the well-known Belgian-born artist Alice Bernardine Esders (1910-1984), who, for personal reasons, moved to Italy, first visiting the Ligurian Riviera and later settling in Tuscany. She began actively exhibiting from the 1960s, taking part in important local events such as the famous Premio Rotonda in Livorno and winning prestigious prizes (such as the Premio “Spinetti” in Florence in 1962). She spent the final years of her life between Livorno, Tirrenia, and finally Florence, where she passed away in 1984. From a stylistic point of view, she is known above all for her landscapes, seascapes, and her still lifes/flower studies, characterized by a marked post-impressionist maturity and a rich, vibrant color application. Esders’ works are distinguished by the typical dense, substantial, and vibrant brushwork of the artist, capable of capturing the very essence and light of the floral composition without recourse to geometric depth, highlighting the pure substance of color. In particular, this work is characterized by: • The Palette Knife Technique: The use of the knife is clearly evident in the petals of the central roses (yellow, orange, and pale pink). The color is laid on in thick impasto, creating reliefs that catch the light and give three-dimensionality to the flowers. • The Late-Impressionist Style: The dark, undefined, and almost misty background makes the bouquet’s chromatic vivacity stand out. The flowers are not defined by precise contour lines but are “constructed” through patches of color and contrasts of light, a distinctive trait of the artist’s mature style. • The Signature: At the bottom right is visible the artist’s signature, traced vertically with the characteristic slant of her handwriting. Additionally, on the lower part of the matting there is a metal plaque bearing her name. This is a very representative piece of Esders’ floral production, where the strength of the painting material combines with great delicacy in the choice of shades and composition. Total dimensions (with frame): 80 x 100 cm Painting dimensions: 60 x 80 cm Technical details: Protected by normal glass (not anti-reflective). Framed in a sumptuous and important gilded antique frame that shows light, historical signs of wear and a small dent testifying to its authenticity. Presence of a metal plaque with the artist’s name.
