Algebraic Problem GALTIMAN. — ALGEBRAIC PROBLEM. Paris, for sale and on consignment, 7 rue du Croissant, circa 1870. Large satirical lithograph depicting a series of ten successive profiles culminating in Napoleon III, juxtaposed with a fantastical creature bearing the inscription “Prussian hook.” The text concludes: “So Napoleon III’s head resembles a mackerel’s head? So the problem is solved.” A rare composition based on a graphic transformation and a pseudo-mathematical pun. Black lithograph. A few foxing spots, creases, and minor marginal imperfections.
