With works such as “Heilandsgesicht” and his series of “Abstract Heads,” Jawlensky developed a reduced pictorial language in which color and form carry symbolic meanings. His style is characterized by luminous colors, strong outlines, and a clear division of planes. Jawlensky's work is closely connected with artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, with whom he collaborated in the artist group Der Blaue Reiter, as well as Marianne von Werefkin, whose expressive painting and worldview shaped his artistic development.
