Alexandre Thomas Francia (1815-1884)

Oil on canvas, Signed FRANCIA (attributed to Alexandre-Emile Francia), gilded wooden frame with period moldings, Overall dimensions: 27 cm x 22 cm; Canvas 18 cm x 13 cm From a private collection, good overall condition for this old painting with its original canvas and frame (circa 1850s) with usual signs of aging without major alteration. Pasture landscape of the Norman bocage, in the twilight light. Two cattle drink peacefully. In the distance, a few houses perched on the hill appear. On the left, the poplars raise the composition up to the sky from which the late-day light, remarkably realized, casts its glow in reflections on the calm waters of the pond. Harmony, serenity, romantic atmosphere and the poetry of nature — this is what emanates from this little “gem” of Barbizon school style. Alexandre Thomas FRANCIA, born April 1, 1815 in London and died July 23, 1884 in Brussels, is a French painter. Son of the landscape painter and watercolorist François Louis Thomas Francia (1772-1839), he is like his father a recognized painter and watercolorist, specialized in landscapes and seascapes. He led an international career, exhibiting from 1835 at the Paris Salon, then in London, Vienna, Antwerp and Brussels. He later settled in Belgium where he was made a knight of the Order of Leopold for his artistic merits. His works are held in several international museums.
