Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and awarded the Prix de Rome, he stood out for his compositions with historical, mythological and religious themes, characterized by a refined treatment of the human figure, theatrical lighting and careful technical execution. His work enjoyed great recognition at the French official Salons and was appreciated by the aristocracy and the imperial court of Napoleon III. The present work represents a devotional scene of Saint Mary in a contemplative and ecstatic attitude. The female figure appears seated in a somber and intimate setting, with her gaze lifted toward the celestial plane and her arm extended in a gesture of spiritual acceptance. Over her, several cherubs emerge from shadows and clouds, adding dynamism and depth to the composition.
