ALDROVANDI (Ulysses). *De quadrupedibus digitatis viviparis libri tres*, and *De quadrupedibus digitatis oviparis libri duo*. Bologna: Antonio Bernia, Nicolo Tebaldino, 1637. Folio, pebbled calfskin, double blind-stamped bands, decorated spine, fawn-colored title label, red edges (18th-century binding). First edition, featuring a frontispiece title page engraved by Coriolano and illustrated with numerous woodcuts in the text depicting animals and monsters. A native of Bologna, the physician and naturalist Ulysses Aldrovandi (1522–1605) was one of the pioneers in the field of natural history; he possessed a remarkable cabinet of curiosities and founded a botanical garden in his hometown. A pleasant copy. A few foxed leaves; slight waterstain in the lower margin of several leaves. A small tear without loss at the top of leaf SS3 and a small, filled-in wormhole at the bottom of the last leaf. Minor losses to the headbands; traces of worm damage around the first rib at the top of the spine.
