Alaskan Walrus Ivory Scrimshaw Plaque - Walrus Head & Arctic Landscape

North America, Alaska, Inuit / Yupik tradition. A slab of walrus ivory, split lengthwise from the tusk and polished, carrying an incised and ink-rubbed scene of the Arctic coast. At the right a bull walrus lifts his head above the waterline, the whiskered muzzle and paired tusks rendered in stippled hatching. To the left the scene shows a low sun behind ridged coastal mountains with gulls indicated in a few strokes overhead. The unknown artist's initials "RP" appear at the lower right. The plaque is mounted on a section of walrus ivory with brass posts. This item is made of or contains walrus and qualifies for exemption under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) as an antique.
