Al Haggounia 001 – Fossil meteorite from the Sahara, with certificate Specifications Name: Al Haggounia 001 Type: Stony meteorite (enstatite) Weight: 18.22 grams Dimensions: 37 x 27 x 18 mm Find location: Sahara, Morocco/Western Sahara Found: 2006 Includes: Certificate of Authenticity and specimen identification card About this meteorite Al Haggounia 001 is a special and scientifically interesting meteorite, discovered in 2006 near Al Haggounia in Western Sahara. The meteorite was partly unearthed beneath a sabkha lake, while other pieces were found embedded in the rock. In total, an estimated about 3 tons of material were found, spread over an area of about 40 kilometers. What makes this meteorite especially remarkable is its age on Earth. Radiocarbon dating points to a terrestrial age of approximately 23,000 years. This makes Al Haggounia 001 a "fossil" or "paleo" meteorite: an object that fell to Earth thousands of years ago and has since been exposed to wind, water and other weathering processes, visible in the reddish-brown, weathered crust. A unique addition for any meteorite or mineral collection: not only a piece from space but also a piece of Earth's history thousands of years old.
