Adriaan Poirters was baptised on 2 November 1605 in the Sint-Petrus’-Bandenkerk in Oisterwijk. He was a son of an innkeeper at the church in Oisterwijk, called De Ploeg. In 1618 or 1619 he began Latin studies at the Jesuit college in ’s-Hertogenbosch, then continued at the Jesuit college of Marchiennes and later went to Leuven, where he studied philosophy and theology. In 1638 he was ordained a priest, entrusted with pastoral care in Dunkirk to later become prefect of studies in Roermond and thereafter in Mechelen. Poirters was active as a teacher, spiritual writer, and author of poetry often with a moralizing content. He is thus considered the Catholic counterpart to Jacob Cats. His most famous work is Het Masker van de Wereldt, published in Antwerp in 1646, and since reprinted more than sixty times. Adriaan Poirters is known as a strong advocate of the Counter-Reformation. He died on 4 July 1674 in Mechelen, possibly due to the plague. Through the initiative of chaplain Anton Huijbers, in 1926 a statue of Adriaan Poirters was erected in Oisterwijk. The bronze statue, crafted by Aloïs de Beule, was placed in 1926 on the Marktplein. Today it can be found on the Kerkplein, opposite the Sint-Petrus’-Bandenkerk. In September 1934, among others, Henri de Greeve helped establish a Catholic publishing house named after Poirters in Eindhoven, the Poirtersfonds, effectively a book club. The Poirtersfonds was dissolved during the war.
