Adoration of the Magi Niederländisch

This striking depiction portrays the Adoration of the Christ Child by the Three Wise Men. At the centre of the densely composed scene, the Virgin sits with the Child resting on her lap in a suggested stable setting. Guided by the Star of Bethlehem, the Three Kings and their retinue surround her, presenting gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They represent the three continents known in the 15th century – Europe, Asia and Africa – and also symbolise three different stages of life. A large retinue animates the background and draws the eye out into the expansive landscape. The composition draws on Martin Schongauer’s engraving ‘The Adoration of the Magi’, c. 1470. Particular attention is paid to the nuanced rendering of the precious fabrics, the gold brocade and the armour. The rich colour palette of red, green and gold tones lends the composition a festive air. | 15.-18. Jahrhundert | Gemälde | Nummer: 26x1609 | Provenance: Privatsammlung, Nordrhein-Westfalen (seit mehreren Generationen in Familienbesitz).
