Abdoulaye Derme - Sculpture

This bronze sculpture by Abdoulaye Derme represents a stylized rhinoceros with clean, modern lines. The artist here plays with the simplification of forms to convey an impression of calm power and animal serenity. The massive body is deliberately compact and smooth, with a dark brown patina nuanced by reflections of gold that highlight the artisanal work in bronze. The head lowered and the long horn give a nearly meditative posture, typical of certain contemporary African sculptures inspired by both nature and traditional forms. The cuts under the neck and between the legs visually lighten the piece and emphasize its graphic aspect. The minimalist treatment recalls the work of many Burkina Faso bronziers using the lost-wax technique, very present in contemporary African art. This work exudes a strong decorative presence while remaining sober and elegant. It can be described as: “Stylized bronze rhinoceros with a dark brown patina, contemporary African artisanal sculpture with clean and expressive lines, made in the spirit of Burkina Faso bronzes.” Sculptures attributed to Abdoulaye Derme are often unsigned but recognized for their fluid shapes, simplified silhouettes and contemporary decorative character.
