Museum of Science and Literature – New Series, Year I – Naples, 1843–1844 – 2 volumes with large folded sheet of Mount Etna Interesting set of two nineteenth-century volumes from the Neapolitan periodical Museum of Science and Literature, belonging to the first year of the new series, published respectively in 1843 and 1844. The magazine collects original contributions from Italian scholars and intellectuals devoted to natural sciences, geology, philosophy, history, literature and the fine arts. Among the topics covered are volcanological studies by Leopoldo Pilla, scientific observations, historical research on the Mezzogiorno, studies on philosophy, music and European literature. Of particular interest is the large folded topographic map of Mount Etna, titled Plan of Mount Etna, with geographic indications and references to the eruption of November 1843. The map constitutes an element of notable historical and documentary interest for enthusiasts of antique cartography, the history of Sicily and volcanology.
