A six-panel folding screen with dragons amid clouds

A six-panel folding screen (byōbu), incorporating six vertical ink paintings set against an extensive gold-leaf ground. The paintings depict a succession of dragons (ryū) appearing and disappearing amid turbulent clouds, driving rain, waves and waterfalls. The creatures are rendered with remarkable pictorial freedom, emerging almost spectrally from dense tonal washes of ink. Within Japanese iconography, the dragon is closely associated with water, clouds and rainfall, and traditionally regarded as a powerful protective creature capable of commanding the forces of nature. The screen is finished with elegant silk borders and a lacquered wooden frame. The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider. Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings. ---The byobu is in very good condition, with minor wear. Wear to the lacquered frame, consistent with age and use. Please refer to the pictures for further details. The item will be carefully packed and shipped via DHL or FedEx, accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy. 194
