French, 19th Century, in the Empire taste, each cast as a winged Victory standing upon a globe with her arms outstretched, supporting a pair of tapering candle branches with campana nozzles cast with acanthus and foliate scrolls below shaped drip pans, above a radiating lotus socle, the square rouge griotte marble plinth applied with a gorgon mask to the front and winged amorini to the sides, on a stepped base with lotus-cast borders. (2) 54cm high, The model follows a celebrated Empire design of winged Victories bearing candle branches, associated with the Parisian bronzier Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843). Thomire trained under the sculptor Augustin Pajou and worked in the circle of the ciseleur-doreur Pierre Gouthiere, supplying gilt bronze mounts to the Sèvres manufactory before becoming the pre-eminent bronzier of the Napoleonic era and ciseleur de l'Empereur. The design proved enduringly popular and was repeated by other Parisian makers through the 19th Century
