A Knole-Style Upholstered Sofa, Late 19th/ Early 20th Century On casters. Dimensions: 66 1/2 in. wide, 28 in. deep, 45 in. high, seat height 22 1/2 in. Provenance: Mrs. Caroline (Lina) Perry (nee' Sinnickson) Shore (1870-1957); Thence by Descent; Property of a Philadelphia Family. Caroline (Lina) Shore was from a wealthy Philadelphia family. In 1907, she married Offley Shore, an Englishman and army officer whose ancestral home, Norton Hall in Sheffield, was sold out of the family in 1925. The couple lived in India until 1917, and in 1919 moved to the United States. Their stay, however, was short-lived, and they were in Scotland in 1922 when Offley passed away. Lina lived in Grosvenor Square, London from the late 1920s until she was installed in a "grace and favour" apartment at Hampton Court Palace in Richmond. Shore was the last tenant of the Clock Tower Apartment, housed under the cupola designed by Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723). Long neglected and in disrepair, Shore made a number of interesting discoveries from the palace's earliest Tudor times. This lot, along with several others in this sale, were part of Shore's interiors at the time of her tenancy. Condition The butter yellow upholstery with soiling, stains, and wear. One foot recently reattached.
