A. H. Shires "The Synchronous Electric 'Time' Signal Clock" square wall clock, circa 1930s, with an oak veneered dial fitted with chrome Arabic numerals and Art Deco style chrome hands, powered by a self-starting 220 volt AC synchronous motor driving both the hour and minute hands and an integral signalling mechanism, British Patent number 149,400 which dates to 1920–1921, is stamped on the movement back plate, 13" square, depth 4.25" ** Designed as a clock operated time switch, the mechanism incorporates a pair of electrical contacts actuated automatically every twelve hours, enabling the control or signalling of an external electrical circuit. The clock derives its accuracy from the frequency of the mains electricity supply, combining reliable synchronous timekeeping with automatic electrical switching for commercial and industrial applications ** From the David Read Collection
