A GEORGE II MAHOGANY DRAUGHTSMAN'S TABLE IN THE MANNER OF JOHN CHANNON AND HIS CIRCLE, CIRCA 1750 The brass lock plate with a sliding section concealing the keyhole, the brass lock and handle plate engraved with a bare-footed figure with a head dress, skirt and spear, the table with a ratchet adjustable top, the front opening to a gilt tooled leather inset and hinged slide opening to divided storage and hinged wells 76.5cm high (123cm fully raised), 84.5cm wide, 58cm deep See Christopher Gilbert & Tessa Murdoch, John Channon and brass-inlaid furniture 1730-1760, for related examples of furniture with hinged and sliding sections concealing keyholes, and engraved and hatched brass and lock plates set flush into the wood associated with the work of John Channon and his circle. See plates 120-123 showing the relationship between the use of book plate engravings as a source for engravings on brass inlay, and indeed the engravers themselves of fine book plates and stationery engravers being commissioned to undertake this work on furniture lock plates.
