Vintage gelatin silver print on resin coated Kodak paper, with 'This Paper Manufactured By Kodak' watermarks. Rare and unusual NASA print of a Soviet image from the Venera 13 lander. [Captioned in Russian] ВЕНЕРА-13 ОБРАБОТКА ИППИ АН СССР И ЦДКС (Venera-13: Processing by The Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Central Research Institute of Chemical Synthesis) This image from the surface of Venus was captured by the rear camera of the Soviet Venera 13 lander in 1982, the first lander to take a color image of Venus. This black and white print was created by NASA from the Soviet photographs for distribution. Intriguingly, this does not appear to be simply a black and white print of the famous color photograph but rather a distinct clear-filter image. Distinctive characteristics of Soviet digital camera technology are visible in the finished picture, including scanlines from the transmission process and banding resulting from the stitching together of several shots to cover the rolling bars of telemetry information that interrupted the original digital video stream. The lander itself is visible at the bottom of the image, including the multicolored calibration stick (right) used to approximately color balance the colored video (comprised of multiple passes with different colored filters).
