A. Arnould

Fascinating seven-volume illustrated set of this vast chronicle devoted to one of the most famous and most symbolic monuments in France’s political and prison history, from the fortress’s construction to its disappearance during the French Revolution - La Bastille, built from 1370 under the reign of Charles V to strengthen Paris’s defenses, initially appears as an important military fortification intended to protect the capital, before gradually becoming a state prison and, in the collective imagination, the symbol of monarchical arbitrariness - The authors trace this transformation over several centuries by mixing political history, captivity narratives, anecdotes, biographies of prisoners and evocation of events that marked the fortress’s life - The early developments allow understanding the Bastille’s strategic role during the Middle Ages, its integration into the Parisian defensive system and its architectural evolution, before its military importance gradually declined with changes in artillery and warfare techniques - A.
