Eastern Mediterranean, Byzantine Empire. A mold-made pilgrim token, or eulogia, in fired red clay. The face is stamped in low relief with a column supporting the bust of Saint Symeon Stylites, flanked by winged attendants with smaller figures below, all within a beaded border. Tokens of this kind were pressed from earth gathered at the base of the saint's column and carried away by pilgrims as healing and protective objects. Symeon the Elder (died 459) spent roughly thirty-seven years atop a pillar in the limestone hills northeast of Antioch, and the vast cruciform church of Qalat Siman rose around the stump of his column after his death. Pilgrims who reached it were given tokens of the holy earth trodden by the saint, and the Syrian clay itself was understood to carry his intercessory power: the miracle collections describe the tokens curing fevers, blindness, and infertility. A second stylite, Symeon the Younger (died 592), attracted an equally busy token industry on the Wondrous Mountain west of Antioch, and his workshops produced very similar stamped discs. Distinguishing the two cults on a single worn impression is rarely possible without a legible inscription, and both possibilities remain open here. Item # 204620
